Primarily, Useful Fictions is David Whittaker, plus whoever else - writer, editor, techie, fixer, illustrator, guru, etc. - he needs to grab, drag, or cajole into working on a given project. He'll be the one that answers the phone anyway.

For two reasons. First, because the world is full of useful fictions that help it go round and get things done. Second, it was the name of an artwork by an influential but relatively unknown American Artist in the 1950s who had a great outlook on life. His name's Allan Kaprow, in case you'd like to look it up.

We'd like to think that by working with like-minded individuals and organisations, who share similar beliefs and values, that we really can understand the purpose of a given design project, not just agree on what it should look like or do. We've also worked in management roles for various NGOs, charities, and community organisations, so know what makes them tick, and the gymnastics of time, money, and everything else required on a daily basis.

Actually artistic, and most if not all other excesses, aren't great reasons for much. But what we're trying to say is that communicating in an effective way through good design can be a valuable asset in achieving the social goals of your organisation, and in that sense, it shouldn't just be the preserve of big commerical business trying to sell glossy stuff. Whether you're advocating, informing, convincing, proposing, or celebrating, we want to help you have more of an impact with a bit of artistic thinking.
